ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
On Saturday, September 25, we will take a critical look at a variety of alphabets, exploring the distinctive characteristics of each. Studying the letter parts will help students understand the structure of letters, and discern the nuances that go into developing hands or fonts. Next, Julie will lead students through a series of exercises—using both traditional and non-traditional tools—that will result in all sorts of creative ways to make letters. Through these exercises, students will gradually work toward a personal style preference. Then the real fun begins! Students have the option of creating either a cohesive alphabet OR compile an alphabet with a different style for each letter.
On Sunday, September 26, we will fine tune the alphabets and decide to use either color or black and white for our final work. During the final portion of the class we will assemble a simple, but elegantly designed accordion-fold book with an origami-style cover. No gluing or sewing is required. OPTION – Students may choose to cutout and glue the letters they have drawn on paper.
Handouts and Other Details: A full set of workshop handouts, any guidelines that Julie may use and all other course details, including the Zoom link to the optional online class, will be made available two weeks before the workshop weekend.
