Donald Jackson’s hand in the Saint John’s Bible is a new variation on several old, well-loved hands. When the various elements of each are put together, they make an extremely pleasing, but difficult hand to write.

In this workshop we will study and de-construct the lower case and upper-case letters of the primary text body which Jackson created especially for the St. John’s Bible. We will then work to learn the ductus and will write it on graph paper at a larger size for ease of learning. Finally, we will try writing on good quality paper.

I will also show you how to step it down to make the lettering smaller.

SUPPLY LIST

Handouts – please bring the handouts you received at the Guild meeting. Extra copies will be available.

Paper – Please pre-line at least one sheet of graph paper and one sheet of good quality paper.

• Graph paper – one sheet pre-lined. If you use ink, make sure the paper does not bleed. The lines should be ¼ / ¾ / ¼ / ¾, etc.
• Good quality paper – go through your stash and find 2 pieces of 8 ½ x 11 paper – Arches text wove, Frankfurt, Zerkell, Ingres, Stonehenge, Nideggan or anything that you may have in your drawer. These should be pre lined also. If you are a fast writer, you may need more than 2 pieces.

Pens – Choose one or two of the following:

• Parallel Pen 2.4
• Brause 2.5
• Mitchell 1.5
• Tape 2.5
• Quill cut to size
• If you want to try writing at a smaller size, you will need to bring smaller nibs.

Ink/ Gouache / Stick Ink

• This item is your choice, whichever you are more comfortable with. You may want the gouache or stick ink to write on the good paper.

Brushes & mixing palette

• You will need these if you choose gouache or stick ink

Red pen

Magnifying glass or Opti Visor

Small protractor

12” ruler
